GNOTHI SEAUTON

Know thyself. The inscription at Delphi. The oldest instruction in Western philosophy.

"Gnothi Seauton" is an art installation that merges the symbolism of hydration bladders with the profound concepts of self-discovery, gender pronouns, and personal identity. Through a visually engaging and thought-provoking exploration, the work invites viewers to reflect upon the fluid nature of identity and the empowering role of gender pronouns in expressing an authentic self.

The installation features a display of hydration bladders, pinned to the wall in a row. Every bladder is identical in form. Each contains a different amount of water - between 39% and 73% - a reference to the range of water content normally found in human bodies across biological sex. Each bladder represents an individual's journey of self-discovery, and the varying levels of fluid reflect the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of gender identity. On each bladder, a sticker carrying preferred gender pronouns: He/Him, She/Her, They/Them, Ze/Hir, Xe/Xem and Ey/Em.

The same vessel. Different contents. A label on the outside that tells you what's inside - or attempts to.

The ancient instruction to know oneself assumed that the self was stable, findable, there to be known. "Gnothi Seauton" proposes something more fluid - that identity is not fixed but dynamic, not singular but multiple, not given but chosen and declared. The work celebrates that complexity, emphasising the significance of gender pronouns in acknowledging and affirming one's true self, while challenging the notion that any external form can fully contain what it claims to represent.

By drawing on the elemental - water, the body, the vessel - the installation grounds an abstract cultural conversation in something immediate and physical. It encourages self-reflection, inclusivity, and a celebration of diverse gender expressions, inviting viewers to question inherited categories and honour the full spectrum of human identity.
